Model UN conference
The Georgia Institute of Technology participated in the 53rd annual Midwest Model United Nations Conference (MMUN). Held 20-23 February, the conference had nearly 900 students from the Midwest and beyond participate in a simulation of the United Nations.
Model United Nations is an educational simulation of the various bodies of the UN. By assuming the role of a Member State’s diplomatic representative and working under an explicit procedure in simulated sessions of various UN committees, students are able to take a global perspective on world events. As the student delegates interact in their roles as ambassadors to the UN, they make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate and attempt to collective solve the world’s most pressing problems.
Georgia Tech students, representing the Colleges of Liberal Arts, Engineering, Business and Computer Science, employed a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of Kazakhstan and Yemen. These skills included public speaking, group communication, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, conflict resolution, leadership, note taking and technical writing.
Georgia Tech’s team represented Kazakhstan and Yemen in a number of simulations of four of the main committees of the United Nations General Assembly: Disarmament and International Security; Economic and Financial; Social, Humanitarian and Cultural; and Legal, as well as the General Assembly Plenary in which the delegates from each committee joined forces to represent the delegation as a complete unit. The thirteen team members together sponsored 6 of the eight draft resolutions, 5 of which passed both the individual committees and the Plenary session. The team also sponsored 19 amendments, 18 of which passed.
The team’s president and head delegate for the Yemen delegation Rhushikesh Bhadkamkar and his co-delegate Taylor Prichard jointly received an Honorable Mention in the General Assembly Third Committee. The delegation representing Kazakhstan received an Outstanding Delegation Award for their efforts in the Plenary session.
